Come one, come all and celebrate ski safety throughout the month of January! Keystone will be hosting a variety of entertaining and enlightening events aimed to highlight and promote slope safety for skiers and riders of all ages. The highly interactive and educational opportunities offered this month invite everyone to participate in trail sweeps, scavenger hunts, helmet fittings, and backcountry awareness showcases. Have fun, learn a lot, and stay safe!
Sweep with Ski Patrol
Go behind the scenes with a Patroller! A “sweep” is done every day after a run is closed to ensure that all guests have made it safely back onto an open run. Guests are invited to participate in a trail sweep every day in January. Interested participants need to meet in Patrol Headquarters located in the basement of the Summit House at 3:30 p.m. Green and blue skiing skills are required as some of our terrain is variable; all snow conditions should be expected.
Schoolmarm Safety Scavenger Hunt
Hey, Kiddos! Show your parents around the mountain on this fun and exploratory scavenger hunt down Schoolmarm! Pick up your clue sheet at River Run Guest Services, head up to the top of Dercum Mountain, and embark on your adventure! Once you’re finished, bring your sheets back to Guest Services for a prize! Green skiing skills required.
ThinkFirst Helmet Safety and Fittings
Do you own a skiing or snowboarding helmet? Are you in need of a new helmet? Come visit the ThinkFirst event tent located atop Dercum Mountain between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. on Jan. 16 and 17 for a personalized helmet fitting and to receive a brand-new ski or snowboard helmet. Staffed by Keystone Resort Ski Patrollers and Mountain Safety, along with Centura Health volunteers, this event is dedicated to brain and spine injury prevention, while increasing general skier safety in fun and engaging ways. There will be free hot drinks, giveaways, games, and the chance to meet Keystone’s adorable avy dogs. A suggested $35-40 donation is requested from each helmet recipient, as ThinkFirst is a non-profit organization and utilizes donations to continue its outreach efforts.
Skier Safety Showcase
Learn all there is to know about ski area operations at Keystone Resort! Come visit the free Skier Safety Showcase located atop Dercum Mountain between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. on Jan. 23 and 24 for a hands-on, fun, and educational event designed to provide insight into the day-to-day operations of Keystone Ski Patrol. Learn, or refresh, on how to safely enjoy skiing or riding, while engaging with the various tools and resources that Patrol uses to keep Keystone’s guests safe. EpicMix Photo will be on site to document all of your hands-on experiences with ski patrol uniforms and radios, avalanche dogs, toboggans, other medical equipment, a (stationary) snowmobile, and a (tentative) helicopter visit from Centura Health’s Flight For Life. You will also have the opportunity to learn about safe backcountry skiing and riding practices and how to use an avalanche beacon in a live beacon bowl; beacons, shovels, and probes will be provided. Our younger guests can also venture down Schoolmarm on a skier safety scavenger hunt, design their own ski helmets or Ripperoo’s cape in coloring books, or personalize their own safety and identification cards. Come for the whole day or a short break and enjoy free snacks, hot drinks, and giveaways!
Safety is of top priority and paramount to Keystone’s culture and values. We hope that by educating guests and employees, we can encourage safe skiing and riding habits to allow for nothing but the best experiences on the mountain. A few helpful hints offered by these fun and engaging activities can truly make a difference on the hill. Join in on the fun and celebrate safety!
